Born in Malta in 1965, Tyrone was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1984 after an education at Warminster School, Welbeck College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He spent the next 13 years at Regimental Duty in Airmobile, Amphibious, Armoured and Gurkha units supporting battle groups, brigades and divisions in Germany, Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Hong Kong.
On promotion to Major he completed the Advanced Command and Staff Course, gained an MA from King’s College London, and was posted to HQ Land Command where he was responsible for drafting operational orders for Army deployments worldwide; he received the MBE and also qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer during this period. He then commanded 20 Field Squadron for two superb years, deploying on tours to Belize and Northern Ireland. After a short stint as the Army’s lead Counter Terrorism & UK Operations Staff Officer, he assumed command of 22 Engineer Regiment, deploying to Iraq in 2004; he received the OBE on behalf of the Regiment. After command, he instructed at the Defence Academy before being posted back to HQ Land Forces as the Assistant Director Commitments. This was followed by two cracking years as Commander 1stMechanized Brigade, where he was awarded the CBE for the Brigade’s support to operations in Afghanistan. Most recently, he was the Assistant Chief of Staff Operations at the UK Permanent Joint Headquarters, then Chief of Staff Land Forces at the Army Headquarters in the rank of Major General, and finally General Officer Commanding Force Troops Command comprising 40,000 Regular and Reserve soldiers. In June 2018, on promotion to Lieutenant General, he was appointed Commander Home Command and the Standing Joint Command (UK).
Tyrone is married and has two grown up children; his limited spare time is filled with mountaineering, dog walking, keeping fit, playing squash, and standing in ‘The Shed’ supporting Gloucester Rugby.
Professor Davies left school at the age of 15. He is currently a Professor of Nursing and Disaster Healthcare and Non-Executive Director of the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust. He is President Elect of Confédération Interalliée des Officers Médicaux de Réserve (CIOMR) and has advised at government level on disaster healthcare, education and training in the UK, USA, Japan and Hong Kong where he was an Honorary Fellow at HK University. Professor Davies trained as a nurse in Wales in the late 1970’s and subsequently worked in Accident and Emergency. He joined the Territorial Army in 1983. Following specialist Accident & Emergency Nursing training he joined the Regular Army. Completing the short course at Sandhurst (Joint best student) he served with 34 Evacuation Hospital, the Duchess of Kent’s Military Hospital as Charge Nurse A&E and 23 Parachute Field Ambulance as Training and Nursing Officer. On completion of his time in the Regular Army he returned to Wales as a lecturer and re-joined the TA.
As a Reservist he has deployed to many areas of the world including Bosnia, Kenya facilitating a vaccination programme, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. He was appointed a Member of the Royal Red Cross 1st Class (Military Operational List) in the Birthday Honours 1997 in recognition of Services to the Implementation Force in Bosnia during 1996. He has held a number of command appointments including Officer Commanding 144 Parachute Medical Squadron, Commanding Officer 203 (Welsh) Field Hospital and has served as Deputy Commander 160th Infantry Brigade and HQ Wales. In addition he was an integral member of a Defence Engagement Mission to China in 2014.
He was the course director for a multi-professional, multi-national MSc in Disaster Healthcare for over 10 years and undertakook a full spectrum of teaching and supervision roles across the Faculty from undergraduate to PhD and was Chair of the Military Education Committee for the combined universities of Wales from 2006 to 2013. He is a qualified teacher and completed an MA in Sports Science 1994 and a PhD 2009. He was Queens Honorary Nurse 2009-2012, undertaking a range of Royal duties, appointed Professor in August of 2010 and appointed MBE (Civil List) in the Birthday Honours List 2012. In 2014 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant South Glamorgan.
In addition in 2013 he became a medical advisor to the HALO Trust and has deployed to the Ivory Coast, Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh. He undertakes a number of consultancy roles within industry as well as being CEO of the young people’s charity the Motivation and Learning Trust. He is an ambassador for cancer charity Prostate Cymru and became Chair RFCA Wales and member Council RFCA in May 2014.
Jeff was born in Glasgow before moving to Cardiff at a young age and studied mining engineering at University College, Cardiff. After a successful career as an engineer, Jeff went on to work in education, working with the Welsh Joint Educational Committee (WJEC) and serving on the boards of several educational institutions including Cardiff University and The College, Ystrad Mynach. Elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 2003, he served as Deputy Minister for Skills (2011-2013, with the Technology brief added in 2013) and then Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty (2013-2014), in which role he introduced the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act. Jeff has previously chaired the Assembly’s Committee on Standards of Conduct, and he is currently a member of the Enterprise and Business Committee and the Environment and Sustainability Committee. Jeff Cuthbert was elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent on 8th May 2016 after standing down as the Welsh Assembly Member for Caerphilly.
Manny joined the Parachute Regiment as a soldier in May 1971. After several operational tours of duty in Ireland he was promoted to Sgt in 1978; to WO2 in 1985 and to WO1 (RSM) in 1989 as RSM (I) of the Infantry Signal Wing in Warminster, where he had made his home in 1978.
In 1992 Manny was commissioned; his first post being Unit Families Officer with 3 PARA. After a tour of duty at the Infantry Trg Centre, Warminster, he returned to 2 PARA as Mechanical Transport Officer. This duty included a 6 month Operational tour in South Armagh, Northern Ireland as officer in charge of Europe’s then busiest Heli-port at Bessbrook Mill.
In 1997 Manny successfully applied for the post of Adjutant/Quartermaster at the University of Wales Officers Training Corps in Cardiff where he remained until April 2006. Whilst serving with the UOTC he was awarded the Commander in Chief Land Command’s Award for Meritorious Service for services to Reserve Army Recruiting and Wales UOTC. He was then selected for the post of Officer Commanding 160 (Wales) Brigade Recruiting Advisory Team in Brecon, in the rank of Major.
Manny retired from full time service in August 2011 at the age of 60 having completed over 40 years with the Parachute Regiment – something he is very proud of. On retiring he transferred his commission to Dyfed & Glamorgan Army Cadet Force where he served as the Area Commander for Ceredigion. In 2015 he was appointed as a Deputy Cadet Commandant in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with responsibility for Dyfed. He retired fully in August 2017.
During his service, Manny has been deployed in many areas of the world including North and Central America, S E Asia, most European countries and, most notably in 1982, to The Falklands where he saw action as a Platoon Sergeant in A Coy 3 PARA, taking part in the Battle for Mount Longdon. He has given many presentations on his experiences during the Falklands Conflict, his largest audience to date being to 400 passengers on a P&O cruise ship during a South American cruise.
John Charles was educated at Tonypandy Grammar School, Polytechnic of Wales and Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic. On graduation in 1984, John took up full time employment in the construction industry moving from Project Engineer, through planning and design co-ordination roles to Projects Manager on a wide range of complex building & civil engineering schemes in the UK & Germany. In 2010, he moved into Asset Management and now looks after a portfolio of PFI hospitals with a capital value of c£120M.
John joined the TA in 1977 as a Sapper in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia), commissioning in 1980 via Wales UOTC and has since served continuously at Regimental Duty and on the Staff; he has four unit Second-in-Command tours to his credit. He has been active with the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Wales as the Chairman of the South Wales Forum, Chairman of the Estates Committee and is a Trustee of the Wales Reserves and Cadets Fund.
Professionally John has been Chairman of the Cardiff Centre and South Wales Region of the Chartered Institute of Building.
John is a Trustee of Mid-Glamorgan Scout Area, Secretary of the Army Benevolent Fund’s Glamorgan Appeal, Chairman of SSAFA’s Mid-Glamorgan Branch, Court Assistant of the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales, Community Governor of Tonypandy Community College, Member of the Cwm Tâf Community Covenant Panel and President of Taff Rhondda Youth Rugby Union.
In 2012, he was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Mid-Glamorgan; John has carried out a number of duties on behalf of HM Lord Lieutenant.
John joined the Motivation and Learning Trust as a Trustee in September 2015.
Andy Dodge joined Cardiff University in 2013 in the role of Employability and Placements Manager at Cardiff School of Social Sciences (SOCSI). He heads up employability and placement initiatives within the School of Social Sciences and across the University. (SOCSI offers degree pathways in Education, Criminology, Social Sciences, Sociology and Social Policy).
Andy has considerable experience in all aspects of the education, training and employability agendas particularly focussed on 16 – 24 year olds. Prior to joining Cardiff University, Andy worked for National Training Federation Wales (NTFW). The Federation is a pan-Wales membership organisation of over 100 members including independent training providers and FE institutions (together with their associated delivery partners/sub-contractors), local authority training departments and third sector organisations. These organisations provide vocational qualifications and other school based work based learning pathway programmes, pre-employment training and Apprenticeship frameworks throughout Wales. Before the NTFW, Andy worked as a teacher for 18 years in the both the FE and secondary sectors. He worked in a number of institutions across South Wales becoming Deputy Head for two years in his last teaching role.
Huw is the Founding Managing Director of the Motivational Preparation College for Training (MPCT).
Huw joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers at the age of 17 where he served in Northern Ireland, Berlin, Bosnia, Uzbekistan and Malawi. Huw completed his military career reaching the rank of Captain in the Royal Welsh.
After leaving the Army, Huw quickly became known for his passion and ability to relate to young people instilling motivation and determination in the youth of today to succeed and fulfil their ambitions. In 2001, Huw received an MBE for his work with young people.
MPCT has been hugely successful since its conception in 1999 and has been awarded the Investors in People Gold Award three times, the first organisation to achieve such status in the UK. Through Huw’s persistent drive and commitment to help young people, MPCT has now trained over 12,000 Learners, aged 14-19 and 16 – 23 across both England and Wales. The company’s operation has expanded to 32 locations across the UK, employing 176 full time staff.
In August 2014, MPCT was awarded the highest performance grade possible by Her Majesty’s Inspectorates OFSTED, achieving Grade 1 Outstanding across all areas. Huw’s leadership and management skills were recognised as outstanding where “senior leaders place their highest priority on supporting all Learners to succeed”. Huw, along with his team, has helped enlist over 2,730 young people into the Military, resulting in MPCT achieving a Defence Recognition Scheme Silver Award in 2017. Huw was awarded Wales Director of the Year 2017 by the Institute of Directors.
Huw and his team have worked extremely hard to make MPCT the best place to work and these efforts have been recognised as MPCT ranked in the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Small Companies to Work For in 2017. Alongside this, MPCT was awarded 3-Star Accreditation status from engagement specialists Best Companies, which represents extraordinary levels of engagement.
In 2017 MPCT was named as the TES “Training Provider of the Year” – this is one of the most prestigious awards a training provider can receive. Whilst working at MPCT is rewarding, engaging and positively challenging for staff, it is equally rewarding for all of the young people who attend the Colleges.
Hailed from Gwynedd, in North Wales, where he was born in 1968, Huw now lives in Monmouth. Huw is a passionate cyclist andwalker as well as a keen runner, having completed many marathons over the years. In 2017, he took on the challenge of completing one of the toughest foot races known to man – the Marathon des Sables. The marathon consisted of six marathons in seven days, carrying all of his own kit and equipment across the Sahara Desert. Huw, together with MPCT Senior Director, Brian Edwards, raised £11,705 for the Motivation and Learning Trust. The charity supports, develops and enhances life opportunities for MPCT Learners’ past, present and future. Huw is planning to tackle this challenge again in 2020.
Huw also loves to spend his spare time with his partner Mel and son Charlie, aged 8 and is an enthusiastic rugby coach for the Monmouth Under 9’s rugby team.
Steve Bowden works as an Education Consultant and has undertaken a wide range of work in the public and private sector in relation to educational policy and developments in Wales.
Steve was seconded to the Welsh Government’s Department for Education and Skills for two years as a professional adviser. During the secondment to the Department for Education and Skills he was a member of the School Management and Effectiveness Division and also worked with the Social Justice Department on the Community Cohesion programme.
Prior to this he was the headteacher of Porth County Community School in Rhondda Cynon Taf between 1996 and 2011. He was deputy head teacher at Treorchy Comprehensive in Rhondda Cynon Taf School from 1992 -1996.
Steve started his career teaching biology and science in schools in South Glamorgan from 1977 to 1989, before being involved in the management of the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative for South Glamorgan between 1989 -1992.
Steve is committed to the principles of community focused schooling. This is clearly recognised at Porth County Community School and in Rhondda Cynon Taf, where an innovative approach to community focused schooling has been recognised nationally and internationally as an outstanding example of translating policy into practice.
Steve’s expertise has been widely sought during his long and varied career in education. He has been invited to present on a range of educational topics both in the UK and abroad, including an ALITE conference in London, the Commenius programme in Brussels and most recently at an educational symposium in Moscow. He is regularly invited to schools and conferences to provide leadership on community focused schooling. His work in this area has been described as exemplary and has been recognised nationally. This particular achievement has led to invitations to Downing Street on two occasions.
He was President of ASCL (Cymru) 2006 -2007 and Honorary Secretary from 2009. Steve has also contributed extensively to and served on a large number of committees, panels and working groups throughout his career, both locally and nationally. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for Cardiff Active Arts Trust and Techniquest as well as acting as an ambassador for the Dallaglio Foundation in Wales. He has also served as a Director for Careers Wales (Mid Glamorgan and Powys). He has acted as an adviser to the All Wales CONTEST Board and the National Numeracy and Literacy Advisory Panel.
He has written a number of publications on a wide range of educational issues. Among them are ‘Respect and Resilience – developing community cohesion – a common understanding for schools and their communities’, Welsh Government, 2011; ‘Examining GCSE Biology’ Co-author, published by Century Hutchinson, 1988 and ‘Industrial Use of Micro-organisms’, published by ASE, 1984.
When he has free time he enjoys walking the wonderful hills of Wales. He has undertaken a number of walks in aid of charity; completing the Ty Hafan Three Peaks Challenge; Across Wales Walk in a Day and a 14 day climbing and trekking expedition in Patagonia as part of an International Challenge team in aid of Cancer Research U.K. Steve is a keen rugby supporter and other relaxing activities include fishing and cooking.
Steve Williams was born in St Asaph in 1969 his Hometown is Denbigh. He served in the Army for 23 years having joined the Army as a Junior Soldier in Cwrt-Y-Gollen (Crickhowell) in 1985, he served with 1st Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers, later to become The Royal Welsh for the duration of his career and serving in the UK and on international exercises and on Operational tours he left in 2008.
He retired from service after his injury and medical complications, which resulted in a below knee amputation and he felt he could no longer do what he wanted in regard to his future in the Forces due to his reduction in his physical capabilities and mobility.
Whilst in the Army Steve performed a variety of leadership and challenging roles both within the Regiment and on posting from Company Sergeant Major (CSM), Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant (RQMS), Welfare Officer and Regimental Careers Management Officer (RCMO).
On leaving the forces Steve joined MPCT as the Area Manager for North Wales and the knowledge he has learnt throughout his forces career, was put to good use in enabling the Managing Directors vision for the Company to be implemented further.
Steve was made a Director (Director of Operations for MPCT) in 2009 responsible operationally for all the college locations.
In 2010 unfortunately and frustratingly due to some complications still from the original injury and infection he had to undergo an above knee amputation reducing his mobility further.
In 2013 Steve moved to the role of Director of Risk Management for MPCT focusing on H&S, Safeguarding and Welfare.
Steve is thankful that he is part of a team that is making a positive impact supporting young peoples’ lives to empower them to reach their personal goals.
He fully supports the Motivation & Learning Trust (MLT) seeing the benefit to groups enabling them to take part in educational visits they would other wise not have been able to attend as well as to individual support for some learners as required.
Paul joined the Army in 1989 and served in many roles, including being a member of the Adjutants General Corps where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Paul served in many places around the world including the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and Germany and has been on Operational Tours to Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq.
Having been medically discharge from the Army unexpectedly, Paul decided to look for a new career direction that still maintained a link with the Armed Forces whilst giving him the opportunity to take control of his own destiny by being his own boss.
Paul’s 21 year service history with the Army has given him not only an excellent background of working in a demanding role but also a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills that he has been able to carry forward into his role as Regional Director of Forces Recruitment Services (West Midlands). Being highly motivated and self driven are key attributes that Paul uses to carry his business forward and make it a success.
Paul feels that his own knowledge of the military and the resettlement process enable him to find the right candidates for the right clients. Coupled together with good knowledge of how trades and skills transfer from the military to the commercial market, Paul is confident that the FRS (East Birmingham) office will be able to provide a first rate service to both candidates and clients
Dionne was born in Llwynypia before moving to Pencoed at a young age. She took an active part in athletics at school level and progressed to represent Wales at 100 m, 200 m and relay. Dionne studied Business and Finance and joined Ford Motor Company as a Finance Assistant straight from college. A career in finance continued for the next 18 years where Dionne held positions in Cardiff City Council, Tesco PLC and a Chartered Accountants.
It was during the 16 years at Graham Paul Chartered Accountants that Dionne demonstrated a passion for Marketing. Fortunately she was afforded the opportunity to change her career path and started upon her CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) journey.
Dionne has worked in Marketing over the last 10 years gaining experience in an accountancy practice, Wales’s largest law firm and eventually at MPCT where she holds the role of Head of Marketing. She is thriving in what is a rapidly expanding, fast paced and demanding role. Her exposure to Learners and their development is the highlight of her working career to date as she has always had a keen interest in education and social issues.
Dionne holds FCIM accredited status with CIM and hopes to gain her full chartered status next year due to continued study and experience.
Dionne has 2 grown up daughters, Amelia who is studying criminology in Durham and Ella who studies at Cardiff and aims to become a teacher. She has lived in Miskin for the last 10 years where she enjoys the country air after living in Cardiff for most of her adult life.
Emma is the Director of Finance at MPCT and the Treasurer for the charity. Emma is a qualified accountant and fellow member of the Association of Certified and Chartered Accountants (ACCA) since 2006.
In her early career she trained and specialised in payroll related work. It was payroll work that saw Emma employed by a local firm of Chartered Accountants as a Payroll Bureau Manager, which in turn led to her training to become a qualified accountant. Emma was promoted through the company to position of Business Services Manager where she specialised in company audits, management accounts and assignments to help companies set up efficient accounting functions. Emma left this role in 2009 in order to gain experience as an accountant working in industry and secured the position of Financial Controller with a computer components distributor, before joining MPCT in June 2014.
Edward Saville was born and brought up in Newport South Wales. He began his career working for British Steel Corporation and later joined Wedge Group Galvanizers Ltd. Working in various roles within the business, he is currently General Manager of the Welsh Division of the company.
Edward has a keen interest in the local community and has stood as both a local and a community councillor.
Edward saw the potential that MPCT students could offer to industry as well as the military and has employed students into apprenticeship and full time roles in his company and is committed to further developing this industry / employer link with the MPCT.

Born in 1966 in Hannover, Germany, I spent the next 16 years experiencing the churn and social diversity of a service child moving around the world. I then joined the Army as an Army Apprentice at the College in Chepstow and completed my Apprenticeship as a welder/fabricator. Developing these skills, I qualified as a coded specialist welder – a peak in this field. I was selected to train the potential future specialist welders of the Royal Engineers, at the Royal School of Military Engineering.
During my full career in the Army I experienced many different working environments within the Royal Engineers. Roles included Combat, Air Mobile, Air Support, Amphibious, Armoured and Air Assault in different operational areas around the world. My career spanned almost 30 years, culminating in my final appointment as the Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) of the 160 (Wales) Brigade Recruiting Advisory Team based at Army HQ in Brecon. In addition to other tasks I was responsible for the preparation and delivery of training, monitoring of recruiting standards, and MIS support to the regional recruiting framework across Wales. Part of my responsibilities was the validation of the regular army staff attached to the MPCT Colleges throughout Wales.
On retirement from full-time service in 2011, I was employed at MPCT as the Employer Engagement Manager. Recently I have been promoted to Head of Communications, a position I very much enjoy. My involvement with the MLT has been from the embryonic stage where we first realised the need for our own charitable trust. I have supported the MD from the onset in identifying Trustees and Patrons and have also actively engaged in fund-raising activities both as a participant and from a planning and delivery perspective. I was delighted to be approached and appointed as a Trustee of the charity.
My interests are golf and rugby and I continue to play, coach and referee in squash, which has been my main focus over many years. Previously I have been Army Junior Squash Champion. I am currently an International Referee and have had the honour of representing Wales as an official at World and European Squash events.
I have been married to my wife Karen since 1992 and we are the very proud parents of our two daughters, Rhianydd and Alys. We live in North Cardiff, conveniently placed to visit the Rhiwbina Squash club; a short walk from my home.
David joined the Royal Engineers as an Apprentice Fitter in Sep 81. After several postings, promotions and tours to Kenya and The Falkland Islands he attended a 2-year Clerk of Works (Mechanical) Course in 1991. On the successful completion of the course David was promoted to SSgt in 1993 and posted to 36 Engineer Regiment at Maidstone. After operational tours to Croatia/Bosnia and another 7 months in The Falkland Island he was posted to St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides as the Resident Engineer. Promotion to WO2 in 1999 brought another posting to a training role at the Royal School of Military Engineering, followed in 2001 to RAF Odiham as a WO1. A very interesting tour of Oman/UAE during the second Gulf War was the highlight of this period.
In 2004 David was commissioned as a Captain (Garrison Engineer) and posted to a Royal Engineer specialist works unit in Chilwell, Nottingham. After short tours to Cyprus and Afghanistan, David took the difficult decision to leave the Army and devote more time to his newly-born daughter Ella.
So in Dec 05 another career commenced in ‘civvy street’. Using the wide-ranging engineering and management skills 24 years in the Army had given David, he was offered a facilities management (FM) role via an ex-Army colleague. For the last 11 years he has worked his way up the FM career ladder in a variety of roles from the Deputy Estates and Property Manager at Gibraltar Barracks in Surrey with Babcock, to the FM Account Manager at Twickenham Rugby Stadium (handy for those Army v Navy matches!). David is currently the Deputy Head of FM with the defence company BAE Systems; a busy role based in Farnborough where he helps lead a £30M+ FM business across the UK.
David is living with his partner Teresa and daughter Ella in Farnham, Surrey. His hobbies include squash (Army colours were proudly received in 2002!), triathlon, running, cycling and reading (mainly sport and military history). This years’ challenge is a full Ironman, so he’s being kept very busy training!
Steve joined the Royal Engineers as an Apprentice in September 1979. After a two-year Fitter Plant apprenticeship at Chepstow and a brief spell Combat Engineer training in Camberley, Steve was posted to Maidstone. During his 2 1/2 years there he managed to fit in two 6 month tours of the Falklands, a United Nations stint on the Green Line in Cyprus and numerous exercises in BAOR. A posting to Germany followed, with detachments in St Kilda, the Outer Hebrides, France, Northern Ireland and attending as many courses designed to physically test, exhaust or injure him!
Back once again in the UK within weeks he was deployed on Operation GRANBY, based in Saudi Arabia. Promoted to Sergeant Instructor he returned to where it all began, at Chepstow Army Apprentices College. After 3 excellent years there, with plenty of skiing, more courses and his first expedition to Corsica, then a 3month spell leading a Caving project in Siberia with Raleigh International, Steve found time to get promoted, married and posted to the Royal School of Military Engineering at Chatham.
Continuing his newly found passion for expeditions he was very fortunate to be asked to be Deputy Expedition Leader with Operation New World leading forty 16 year olds on a life skills adventure in the jungle. More expeditions followed to India and Nepal trekking, and charity work in Ethiopia and Sri Lanka.
After 22 years’ colour service, Steve immediately signed back on as a Reservist Permanent Staff at HQLF Wilton as the RQMS (T). He currently serves as the RQMS at Army Headquarters Andover.
Julie and Steve have been happily married for 21 years and live in a village just outside Salisbury. His spare time includes fair weather riding his cherished Harley, playing golf (albeit poorly), squash (ditto!), downhill skiing, reading military biographies and trying to justify a civilian gym membership!
Steve is a Member of the Institute of Royal Engineers, an Engineering Technician, a TechIOSH, a Graduate in Leadership and Management (GCGI), a Member of the Scientific Exploration Society and ‘Just a Drop’ Water Charity. He has also recently been appointed as a Trustee for The Motivation & Learning Trust, a Young Peoples Charity.
Garry began his Army career at Cwrt-yr-Gollen, Crickhowell, the Prince Of Wales (POW) Division Depot, in 1977 and joined the 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers (RWF) in May 1977. Rising through the ranks he served on tours of Germany, Denmark, Canada, USA, Falklands and multiple operational tours of Northern Ireland where he was awarded the GOC’s commendation. He was also selected as an instructor at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was promoted to WO1 in 1994, taking post as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 5th Battalion Royal IRISH in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland.
In 1996 he was commissioned into the POW Division and posted as a Lieutenant to 1 CHESHIRE in Ballykelly as Second-in-Command of a Rifle Coy before taking over as the Maintenance and Transport Officer with promotion to Captain. He was part of a successful 1 CHESHIRE orienteering team, winning the Northern Ireland competition two years in succession. He returned to 1 RWF as the Quartermaster Technical with several tours of Northern Ireland and a second overseas exercise to Kenya. He completed a post as the Second-in-Command of the Junior Division, Infantry Battle School, Brecon before being promoted to Major.
As a Major he served on several postings as a Quartermaster in 1 RWF with tours of Iraq and Northern Ireland, the logistics mentor with Kabul Military Training Centre in Afghanistan and the 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles in Brunei. The Headquarters Land, as the SO2 Infrastructure Hard in Wilton, moving the Headquarter ARRC from Germany to UK. The 3rd Battalion Royal Welsh, Training Major in Cardiff during the amalgamation process and returned to the Infantry Battle School, Brecon as the Quartermaster Technical.
He was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and moved as the Field Director Gurkha Welfare Scheme in Pokhara, Nepal in 2012. He played a very active role during the strategic development for the Gurkha Welfare Scheme encompassing the establishment, Area Welfare Centre infrastructure, pension payments, school infrastructure and education plan, rural water and sanitation programme, medical scheme and residential home construction. He coordinated the emergency disaster relief aid, during the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake in Apr/May 2015 and was awarded the OBE.
Since retirement from the Army in 2016 he has been employed with Transport for Wales in Cardiff, to provide advice, support and expertise to the Welsh Government to assist in the delivery of key transport projects in Wales. The initial remit is to procure the next Wales and Borders Rail Service and the South Wales Metro.
Garry is a keen mountaineer, an active cyclist and rugby supporter. He is married and has two grown up children.
Born in Wellington, Shropshire, I was raised and educated in the Rhondda Valley. From 1958 to 1960 I served in Brecon and Germany as a National Serviceman in the South Wales Borderers, a regiment now amalgamated into the Royal Welsh. On my demob I returned to Wales, though after some uninteresting jobs, I re-enlisted into the Army in 1963. I then served continuously until 2004, ending my long military career in the rank of Captain. During my career, I saw service in the UK (Northern Ireland), Germany, Hong Kong, Cyprus, North America (both USA & Canada), Aden, and Botswana. During one of my operational tours in Northern Ireland, I was award the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to my unit.
Following my discharge from the Army I became self-employed and spent six years in retailing with my own convenience store. I was looking for a change when I was approached by The Regimental Headquarters of The Royal Regiment of Wales (RRW) and accepted the position of Assistant Regimental Secretary. My main responsibilities being Line Manager for the staff, Chairman of the Regimental Association, and responsibility for all Regimental Benevolence. As there had been many amalgamations of the Welsh Regiments, there was a considerable injured-in-service and ageing Old Comrade population. It was during this period that I was invited to become a member of the Veteran’s Advisory and Pension Committee (VAPC) for Wales, of which I am still a member.
Following my retirement from RHQ RRW I became a Councillor on the Cowbridge Town council. I still serve on the Council and I have been honoured to be elected twice as Mayor. During my initial appointment as Mayor I became familiar with the MPCT and The Motivation & learning Trust (MLT), their supporting charity. During my second term as Mayor I adopted the MLT as one of my chosen charities. I am pleased to say that we raised a significant amount for the charity, and the MPCT assisted greatly by providing helpers for my coffee mornings. I am proud to be a Trustee of the Cowbridge & Llanblethian Trust, a trust that gives assistance to the elderly, the needy, and provides grants to students to assist with their further education.
In 2006 I was approached by the MOD to organise a Veteran’s Day Badge presentation in Cardiff. I was subsequently asked to organise a Veteran’s Day event, again in Cardiff, which became Armed Forces Day and is now an annual event in South Wales. In 2010 I was asked to be a Consultant representing all Veterans for the UK National Armed Forces Day in Cardiff. With a significant VIP presence including royalty, it was a highlight for me. I remained Chairman until I stood down following the 2014 event. I am also currently the Chairman of the Cowbridge and District Royal British Legion.
I live in Cowbridge in The Vale of Glamorgan with Lorraine, my partner of over 20 years. Between us we have six children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
